I just love photographing empty chairs; empty chairs evoke emptiness and film enhances that feeling. I would imagine the chair to be lonely, waiting for someone to use it. Or maybe the chair was once loved by its owner, but it has served its purpose and thus discarded or chucked somewhere where it clearly doesn’t belong to. A lonely chair can also evoke fear, as often being portrayed in horror films.

The chairs above were photographed when I was casually roaming on the streets of Singapore and South Korea. Will this be the only ‘Empty Chairs’ series? I doubt so because I have a slight obsession with them (my friends can vouch for me).

Back in December 2017, I had to make a decision: which country should I go for exchange? Looking from my Instagram, I guess its rather obvious where I chose for exchange. When I was applying last year, I was actually on a KTX (Korea’s fastest train) from Gyeongju (경주) back to Seoul (서울). At that point in time, I was rather emotional because I had a great day out with my Korean friend in Gyeongju and so I thought, I will need to come back to Korea.

Here I am, in KAIST. KAIST is located in Daejeon (대전), 1 hour from Seoul by KTX. Compared to the bustling capital of Seoul, Daejeon is very peaceful. I spend most of my time in Daejeon at different cafes, rushing my assignments in my dormitory or taking pictures. I recently purchased a Yashica and T-max 400 so I thought, why not go around campus and see what I can capture?

And so I did. I went around the school trying to capture as many details as possible, since its a black-and-white film. I am pretty happy with how they all turned out actually, seeing that it was my first time experimenting with black-and-white format. Thankfully it was quite a sunny day, so I managed to get some light and shadows.

The campus is rather huge and that means I have not explored the entire of the campus yet. I probably need to do so really soon, seeing that I am only left with 4 weeks in this campus (super duper sad about it). Time flies when you are having fun, really.
